Northumberland train times: Newcastle £2.40, London 3 hours

Northumberland’s rail map changed in December 2024, when the Ashington, Blyth and Tyne line reopened to passengers after sixty years. The county now has three distinct railways doing three different jobs: the Northumberland Line into Newcastle from the south-east coalfield towns, the East Coast Main Line running north through Morpeth, Alnmouth and Berwick, and the Tyne Valley Line west through Prudhoe, Corbridge and Hexham.

Two numbers are worth knowing before you read further: the flat £2.40 single from any Northumberland Line station to Newcastle, and the three hours it takes the fastest direct train from Morpeth to London King’s Cross.

Getting to Newcastle

For most people in the county, “the train” means the train to Newcastle. Here is what it costs and how long it takes from each station, with times taken from a weekday morning and fares from the walk-up fares data for that journey.

The pattern that jumps out is the fare, not the time. Ashington to Newcastle is 37 minutes for £2.40. Berwick to Newcastle is 43 minutes for £25.30, more than ten times as much for six minutes longer. That is not an error: the Northumberland Line runs on a capped local fare, while the East Coast Main Line runs on ordinary long-distance pricing.

The Northumberland Line

The line between Ashington and Newcastle reopened to passengers on 15 December 2024, sixty years after the last scheduled service. It calls at Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland Park and Manors, and passengers made more than 800,000 journeys in its first year.

• Frequency: two trains an hour each way, Monday to Saturday daytimes. Hourly in the evenings and on Sundays.
• Journey time: Ashington to Newcastle in around 35 to 37 minutes, Seaton Delaval in about 20.
• Fare: a maximum £2.40 single at peak times from Ashington to Newcastle, and £2.40 anytime day single from every station on the line. Under-21s with a Pop Blue card travel from £1.
• Trains: two-car Northern units with 138 seats, two wheelchair spaces, bike space, accessible toilets, free wi-fi and charging points.

Two timetable changes landed on 14 December 2025. The last train from Newcastle to Ashington moved from 22:16 to 22:23, and a new 23:21 late service was added on weekdays and Saturdays. Sunday services were extended through to the MetroCentre.

What it means for you. If you live in Ashington, Bedlington or Blyth, a night out in Newcastle now works without a taxi home, which it did not a year ago. Buy before you board: you need a ticket bought in advance, from the machine on the platform, or a “promise to pay” ticket if you want to pay cash on the train.

Direct trains to London

Three Northumberland stations have direct LNER services to London King’s Cross. You do not need to change at Newcastle, though changing there often gives you more choice of departure time.

Alnmouth and Berwick get a broadly two-hourly direct service through the day, with departures around 06:25, 08:30, 10:29, 12:29, 14:29, 16:30 and 18:30 from Alnmouth and roughly two hours either side of those from Berwick. Morpeth’s direct trains are more clustered around the peaks: the fastest of the day is the 16:37, into King’s Cross at 19:37, exactly three hours.

What it means for you. Morpeth is the fastest London station in the county but the least frequent, so a direct train is worth planning around rather than turning up for. From anywhere else, the reliable move is a short hop to Newcastle and a King’s Cross train from there, which runs at least twice an hour for most of the day and takes about 2h 50m.

Advance singles start around £83 to £94 if you book ahead. The walk-up Anytime Single from Morpeth or Alnmouth is £201.90, and £204.00 from Berwick, so booking ahead is not a small saving on this route, it is most of the fare.

Late trains

The last useful southbound departures for London leave in the early evening, but the late-night pattern for getting home within the county is more generous than it used to be.

• Newcastle to Ashington: last train 22:23, plus a later 23:21 service on weekdays and Saturdays.
• Morpeth, Alnmouth and Berwick: late direct trains from London leave into the evening, with arrivals after midnight, so check your specific service before relying on it.

Always confirm on the day. Engineering work at weekends changes the picture on all three lines, and the East Coast Main Line is regularly affected.

Getting a discount by arriving by train

One that is easy to miss: Alnwick Castle gives 20% off admission if you arrive by public transport. Show a valid bus or train ticket at the gate. Alnmouth station is the railhead for Alnwick, 25 minutes from Newcastle.
