53 companies registered in Northumberland from 26 September to 10 October: a new Hexham bar company, a Morpeth restaurant, a Barter Books holding company and more, by town.

At least 53 new companies were registered in Northumberland in the fortnight from 26 September to 10 October. The Cramlington area had the most, with nine, followed by the Morpeth area with eight and Blyth with six.

We found them by searching the Companies House register for every new active company with a registered office in the county’s main towns and villages, then checking each postcode against official boundary data. Nineteen companies that came up in the search were left out because their offices are outside the county: eleven of them in North Tyneside, mostly Whitley Bay addresses that share a postcode district with Seaton Valley.

A new company is not always a new shop. Some register at an accountant’s or a home address and trade somewhere else, and holding companies never have a front door. Where the register says what a business does, we say so. We do not publish home addresses, only the town or village.

The ones you might eat, drink or stay in

Five of the 53 are food, drink or accommodation businesses. Each name links to its Companies House record.

  • Smith And Woodward Ltd, registered on 9 October at 32 Priestpopple, Hexham, is classed as a public house or bar.
  • Anatolia Morpeth Ltd, registered on 5 October at 71 Bridge Street, Morpeth, is classed as a licensed restaurant and take-away.
  • Mojo Food Ltd, Blyth, 6 October, a take-away food shop.
  • Sodhi Hotels Ltd, registered on 29 September at Staithes Lane, Morpeth, classed as hotels.
  • Straycation Ltd, Glanton, 27 September, holiday and short-stay accommodation. Two more lettings companies, Stay By The Shore and Stay By The Coast, registered at the same Front Street address in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on consecutive days.

One name stands out among the holding companies. Barter Books Holdings 2 Limited was registered on 6 October at Alnwick Station, Wagonway Road, the home of the second-hand bookshop. The register classes it as a holding company and says nothing more; we have not asked the shop what it is for.

Closures: not checked this fortnight

Our usual second source for this piece is The Gazette, the official record of winding-up petitions, liquidations and strike-offs. On Saturday 10 October its website was offline for scheduled maintenance, so we could not check corporate notices for the county. We will catch up in the next edition. The two petitions we were already following, against Elpha Lodge Residential Care Home Ltd and C T Haulage, are in last month’s piece and remain undetermined on the Companies House register as of our last check.

What it means for you

  • A registration is not an opening. If one of these is on your high street, the company’s own page on Companies House shows its officers and filings; the shopfront, if there is one, will show the rest.
  • If you are starting a business, the same register is where yours will appear. Companies House charges £50 to incorporate online. Registering at a home address puts that address on the public record; many of the companies above use an accountant’s or a business park address instead.
  • Looking for a local trade? Our business directory lists established firms by town.
